Thunder, Lightning and River Rafting!

Colorado has just about every type of weather imaginable. Even in the middle of Summer, surprise storms can sneak up on you. It’s all part of the territory of living in Colorado.

Of course, if you’ve planned a 5 day white water rafting trip for the whole family, the idea of getting caught in the rain can seem a little daunting. And we all know that water and lightning are a dangerous combination. But fear not, white water adventurers, the DVK guides have been doing this for a long time and we know how to keep you safe in and out of the water, rain, shine, thunder or lightning.

Packing a raincoat is never a bad idea, no matter what time of year you book your Colorado river adventure.

Colorado river rafting in bad weather

A light rain and a little drizzle is no problem at all, In fact, it shines a whole new light on the rivers and the surrounding landscape. Paddling is hard work and you work up a sweat, so the cool rain can be a blessing in disguise. And let’s face it, you’re probably already wet from the rapids so a little more water won’t kill you.

When it comes to heavier storms with thunder and lightning, the guides are very careful about when to venture out on the river. Luckily it is rare that a severe storm comes without warning and on longer trips, we’ll be sure to keep you on safe ground should the sky break and lightning strike. While we wait for the storm to pass, we’ll keep you dry and safe in our camps that always come set up with the most weather resistant camping gear, from kitchen tarps and 3 season tents. We also recommend that you pack for any type of weather, so that you have dry clothes and rain gear, just in case. Fortunately, Colorado storms pass by quickly, so take in the experience as part of a wilderness, river rafting adventure.

In case of a storm delay on your river rafting trip, make sure to pack a few distractions for you kids while you wait out the storm.

If you’re rafting with kids, be sure to pack a few distractions like books or games to keep them occupied while we wait out the storm. But you also want to pack lightly, remember you have to bring all of it with you on the raft so you may want to leave the kitchen sink at home. Pack only the essentials and leave the rest behind. If you have any questions about what to pack, just ask and we’ll be happy to guide you. Your adventure starts way before you hit the river and we’re here to help in any way we can from pick up to drop off.
