A word from Bill Dvorak on Browns Canyon’s presidential proclamation

Only in today’s polarized political climate could conservation of a  treasured Colorado landscape be dismissed as a top-down “big-government land grab.” The roughly 22,000 acres in Browns Canyon that will be set aside when President Barack Obama declares it a national monument are already public lands. His action will ensure they stay that way and that the fishing, hunting, hiking and other recreational activities can continue. The backcountry that is home to such iconic wildlife as mule deer, elk and bighorn sheep and the waters that provide some of the best angling in the region won’t be carved up or sold to developers. Those of us who’ve been working for this the past two decades have been repeatedly disappointed by congressional gridlock and ideological battles. A presidential proclamation was our only avenue. It was great to see the President respond to the Public meeting held in Salida Dec. 6 where @700 folks showed up with over 90% of those speaking in favor of the National Monument designation. If that’s not consensus I don’t know what is!
