Exposed: Tragedy and Triumph in Mountain Climbing
Fundraiser for Chaffey County Rescue North
One of the greatest things about living and working in Colorado is the great outdoors. We’ve got mountains, valleys, rivers, plains, lakes and vistas and of course our world famous “Fourteeners”. Colorado is an adventurers dream. There are a million outdoor adventures to experience, and along with those are a million ways to get lost and hurt in the wilderness. As outdoor enthusiasts we understand that safety must always come first and that you need to have respect for nature. Even the best equipment can fail and the best sportsmen can have an accident and make bad judgments. After all, we are all human.
Brad and Melissa McQueen share their mountain climbing trials and tribulations
No one understands that more than Colorado’s Brad and Melissa McQueen. Both native Coloradans, they’ve climbed some of the highest peaks in the world from Mt. Kilimanjaro to several of the 14’ers. In fact, Brad has climbed all of Colorado’s 14,000+ ft. peaks. But even with world class mountain climbing experience under their belts, a few bad choices turned a routine climb 14,265 ft to the top of Mt. Evans into a harrowing night in a blizzard that cost Melissa eight of her toes to frost bite.
It could have been a lot worse, but thanks to the heroic efforts of the Chaffey County Search and Rescue North, the McQueens lived to tell the tale. Now they want to share their experience and the choices that lead up to the worst night of their lives and how “good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgment”!
