Dvorak’s Long Weekend Adventure Guide to Colorado
Just recently, National Geographic did a “Long Weekend Adventure Guide” to several great places in the United States. There were a few nods to Colorado, so we thought, “hmmm, two can play that game”. So here is Dvorak’s personal “Long Weekend Adventure Guide”, inspired by National Geographic.
Where: Arkansas Valley, Salida, Colorado
Meet the expert: Dvorak Expeditions, located in a breath-taking valley, surrounded by beautiful Rocky Mountain Fourteeners.
Rafting: If you haven’t rafted down the Arkansas River through Browns Canyon, our newest National Monument, now is the time to do it. Not only is it an exhilarating experience for first timers, but we can also arrange for a trip down a different section of the Arkansas River, like “Royal Gorge” which offers high intensity class IV and V’s. Let Dvorak show you why this is the most popular whitewater river in the USA if not the world!
Fishing: Did you know that the Arkansas River has “Gold Medal” fishing? Do we need to say more? We can upgrade any of our packages to include fishing. Gunnison River Fly Fishing is like a mini-grand canyon, a dream fishing trip in Colorado. It is a remote fly fishing area with deep, steep canyon walls and DVK is one of only two outfitters allowed to fish there. According to Bill Dvorak, this is our company’s most defining trip
“People wouldn’t expect me to pick that trip, it’s not even whitewater, it’s a float trip,” says Bill Dvorak. “All I can offer by way of explanation is that I’m on the Yvon Chouinard progression. I went from rock climber to mountaineer, to kayaker, and now I’m transitioning to fishing guide.” – from Men’s Journal article The 9 Best Outdoor Guides in America (And Their Most Epic Adventures)
Kayaking, Stand Up Paddle Boards, Inflatable Kayak ‘Duckie” trips!
You name it, we have it.
Mountain bike: For leisurely riders we can take you to up to the Alpine Pass about 10,000 and you’ll be going mostly downhill for the duration of your ride. For more advanced riders, we recommend the single track ride up to the historical Alpine Tunnel area which reaches 13,000ft. For all riders you’ll enjoy breathtaking views and spectacular scenery of the Collegiate Peaks all around you.
Horseback ride: We’ve got 1 hour to full day horseback rides in the high country of the Pike/San Isabel National Forest area. This is not to be missed. Ride through wildlife, wildflowers and beautiful vistas in over 10,000 ft altitude. Is you like we can include a day pass to Mt Princeton Hot Springs Resort to soak your tired body or arrange for a massage, after your ride.
Zip lining: Once again, we would take your to rafting down the Arkansas River through Big Horn Sheep Canyon. You’ll enjoy a boxed lunch before taking on the awesome 7 cable zip line ride.
Where to eat: All overnight expeditions will include an abundance of delicious eats and treats by campfire.
Where to sleep: We recommend that all of the adventurers stay at one of the excellent B&B’s in the Arkansas Valley in either Salida or Buena Vista. Of course, while you are on your overnight or multi-day river rafting expedition, you’ll be sleeping in luxurious camping conditions under the Colorado night sky.
How to get there: All activities include transportation to and from and are fully guided.
