It’s no secret that the rivers are flowing a bit lower than usual, but there’s still plenty of fly fishing to be done on Gold metal status rivers. Lower waters can pose a bit of a challenge, but these helpful tips can turn your low water trout fishing trip into a success.

When the waters are low, the trout have a hard time finding hiding spots, making them spook at the blink of a reel so you’ll need to have  little more patience when you head out on lower than usual waters.

Blending in with your surroundings will only help you. This is not the time for bright colors. And as you are approaching the stream in your muted earth tone and camo attire, stay low and slow. Crawl if you have to. Seriously, it may seem silly, but due to the trout’s field of vision you will need to stay lower in lower waters. You may also need to take longer casts in order to stay out of sight.

Gunnison River Fly Fishing_Dvorak Expeditions_08If you can stay out of the water all together, that would be the best option in lower waters. Any movement you make while wading through the water to get to your spot will send shockwaves through the river alerting every trout in sight. And remember, since the waters are low and the natural hiding places from predators are limited, the trout are already spooked to begin with. Don’t freak them out even more by splashing over rocks and the river floor. This also means using lighter lines and smaller leaders.
