Preparing for your stonefly hatch trip

For many fly fishermen, there are only two seasons. There’s the month of June when you finally get to go on our stonefly hatch trip on the Gunnison River, and then there are all the other months where you prepare for your next stonefly hatch trip on the Gunnison River.

Since we’re in the preparedness season, we thought you’d like this video on how to match your hatch. We know that there are going to be Stoneflies, but there could also be Mayflies and Caddisflies. When you go to the fly shop to replenish your stoneflies, make sure you get a bit of variety.

The last thing you want is to get to the Blue Mesa Tail Fishery and find out that you can’t match the hatch. If you show up with plenty of Pteronarcys Californica (Salmon Fly), but the cutthroats, rainbows and browns are staring hungrily at an Ephemerella inermis (Pale Morning Duns), boy are you going to be disappointed.

Even trout believe that variety is the spice of life. Prepare yourself for a bit of everything, cause you just don’t know what the trout are going to be biting until you get there.

Check out this short video on the best way to match your hatch and find your perfect spot for a tranquil day of fly fishing.
