Known as “The River of No Return,” the Salmon River is the longest free flowing river (425 miles) within a single state in the lower 48 and contains the second deepest gorge on the continent, a mile deeper than the Grand Canyon. Salmon Canyon itself was formed 35 to 45 million years ago. The Salmon River originates in the Sawtooth and Lemhi Valleys of Idaho, and is fed by snowpack from 4 mountain ranges – the Sawtooth, Salmon River, Clearwater and Bitterroot Mountains. One of the nations first “Wild and Scenic” rivers, the upper section of the Salmon passes through the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, while the lower section forms the southern boundary of the Gospel-Hump Wilderness.
The Salmon Canyon’s rugged environment provides habitat for abundant wildlife including bighorn sheep, elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, mountain goats, black bear, cougar, and moose. Waterfowl, shorebirds, and songbirds are particularly plentiful during seasonal migrations. The Salmon River offers high quality sportfishing for resident populations of cutthroat and rainbow trout, steelhead and whitefish.
The Middle Fork of the Salmon River winds for 105 miles through the River of No Return Wilderness. The smooth bends of the river are punctuated by the sound of approaching rapids including Velvet Falls, Redsides and Rubber. In the cool clear waters you can fish for Rainbow trout, Dolly Varden and the Cutthroat the locals call “Redsides.” After a day of paddling and fishing, relax in the waters of the natural hot springs that line the river.
Two specialty trips are run on this river, a kayaking trip in July and a fly fishing instructional course in early September. Our trips are run in conjunction with Outdoor Adventures – Idaho River Journeys, a licensed Idaho outfitter.
