The famous Colorado Spring flowing Dolores river is the home of the legendary Class V Snaggletooth Rapid. Here begins one of the most challenging stretches of white water in the west, culminating in the fury of the Narrows, ten miles downstream. For thrilling fun with less adrenaline, these stretches also include exhilarating Class II to IV whitewater rapids.

The Dolores flows down from the San Juan Mountains into one of the most beautiful wilderness canyons in North America. Stop for a side canyon hike to encounter Anasazi Ruins and mysterious petroglyphs and pictographs left by “The Ancient Ones” on steep canyon walls.

Relax while your Guide and Chef prepares delicious and beautiful outdoor snacks, lunches, and dinners for you and your group. Find your cozy accomodations set up and waiting for you to turn in for the night after your day on the river. Camp beneath ancient 100′ Ponderosa pines, and watch the stars fill the western sky. Enjoy treats, unique camp cocktails, relaxing, and recounting the day’s adventures with your party.

*NOTE: The Dolores depends on run-off from the snow pack for the current year. 2017 looks good, and we will know the status of this trip when snow-tel reports are in.

THE DOLORES SECTIONS:
Ponderosa Gorge 47 miles | Class III-IV: Here, the river flows down through the high country running clear and cold, teeming with trout. This stretch is the home of the legendary Class IV Snaggletooth Rapid. Here begins one of the most challenging stretches of water in the west, culminating in the fury of the Narrows ten miles downstream.

Slickrock Canyon 50 miles | Class II-III: More moderate rapids provide a good stretch for instructional kayak, canoe or inflatable kayaking. Here, the Dolores slows and enters the walls and more desert-like world of Slickrock. The walls are streaked with desert varnish and rise from the river’s edge to tower hundreds of feet above the water, forming the most enchanting and beautiful desert canyon in the American Southwest. Hidden grottos and side canyons hold the secrets of prehistoric Anasazi pictographs and ruins. You will camp beneath overhangs where the “Ancient Ones” camped thousands of years ago.

Hanging Flume Canyon 45 miles | Class II-III: Once leaving Slickrock, the river meanders across Paradox Valley beneath giant cottonwood trees where rookeries of Great Blue Heron and other bird life abounds. Below Paradox Canyon the river reaches the confluence with the San Miguel River (doubling the volume) and the Hanging Flume Canyon. The historical remnants of the flume – built to get water to the “high bar” of the Lone Tree Placer mine – can still be seen suspended 400 feet above the river.
