Technical Rope Rescue
Dvorak Expedition began our Technical Rope Rescue training in 2005-2006 with Rescue 3 International’s Technical Rope Rescue: Technician Level (TRR: TL) course. This training includes 40 hours of field and classroom instruction (4-6 hours of classroom and 34-38 hours in the field) over a 4 day period. This program is perfect for those who have already taken our rafting in Colorado courses. Maximum Enrollment: 12 students per each instructor.
• Rock climbing, technical rescue, or fire helmet
• Leather gloves
• Work boots, hiking boots, or appropriate footwear
• Long pants, turn-out pants, or coveralls
• Personal climbing or rescue harness, or 20-foot piece of 1-inch tubular webbing
• 2 locking D carabiners
• Appropriate protective clothing for weather conditions
Course Description: This course integrates the most current technology and research on rope rescue from throughout the world, and utilizes “discovery learning” to teach skills necessary to safely effect technical rope rescues in environments ranging from simple over-the-bank situations to vertical cliff and structure rescues. Our curriculum covers basic and specialized equipment, ropes and rigging, safety considerations, scene management and organizations, helicopter applications, special problems, ascending and descending systems, rappelling, belaying lowering and raising systems, Telphers, highlines, and litter management.
Technical Rope Rescue is designed to meet the competencies in NFPA 1670 Standard for Technical Rescue Operations & Training for Technical Rescue Incidents for rope rescue. This course also meets the competencies of NFPA 1006 Standard for Rescue Professional Qualifications.
General & Behavioral Objectives
General Objectives: This course will provide individuals in positions that may involve technical rope rescue operations:
1. A course of instruction in generally recognized rope rescue techniques.
2. An exposure to current rope rescue theories and philosophies being taught internationally.
3. A structured, progressive, hands-on methodology to aid retention of skills, and/or to upgrade existing skills.
4. A mechanism to improve communication and incident management for technical operations
5. Application of current safety considerations for rope rescues.
6. An exposure to pre-planning and size-up of possible locations and hazards where rope rescue operations are needed.
Behavioral Objectives: At the completion of this course the student will:
1. Understand the basic characteristics of ropes, knots, technical gear, and litters used in low angle, to high angle rescue work.
2. Be able to manage such systems with fair competency in actual terrain.
3. Understand the management skills needed to direct a technical rope rescue mission.
4. Be able to tie basic rescue knots.
5. Understand and utilize basic cam devices and hitches.
6. Understand and utilize tensioning systems and mechanical advantage systems.
7. Be able to construct effective anchors, utilize natural and artificial anchors.
8. Understand and utilize rope protection .
9. Be able to manage a self-belay, and understand the differences between Independent Belays and Conditional Belays
10. Be able to package a patient into a litter.
11. Be able to rig a litter attachment system.
12. Be able to set up and manage a friction lowering system.
13. Be able to set up and manage a raising system.
14. Understand the role of the Incident Command Systems and the unique position of Safety Officer in rope rescues.
15. Ascending and descending a fixed rope, while using ascending and descending devices.
16. Set and manage a vertical lowering system and switch to a raising system.
17. Set and manage a system to pass a knot through a raising and lowering system.
18. Direct a raising and lowering evolution with a litter and litter attendant for a vertical rescue.
Prerequisites are that the students be in reasonable physical condition, and have current medical coverage.
Participants will need a USCG Type III or V approved PFD or life jacket, a lightweight water or climbing helmet, dry-suit or cold water wet suit or survival suit, warm footwear (waterproof), gloves and extra dry clothes. Please bring clothing appropriate to cold and or wet weather as the class will be held regardless of the weather conditions. On the field days you will need to bring lunch and drinks.
Ice Rescue Technician Certification Course
Dvorak Expeditions began teaching the internationally recognized program in Ice Rescue and Safety Techniques (IRT) in conjunction with Rescue 3 International beginning in 2003. This intensive hands-on certified ice rescue certification course has been taught to fire departments, search and rescue teams, law enforcement agencies, emergency service personnel and recreational enthusiasts through out the world. It is taught by the active professional instructors of Rescue 3, the originators of the world renown Swiftwater Rescue Technician programs. This course meets N.F.P.A. guidelines for Ice Rescue Technician standards and has been enthusiastically received by state offices of emergency services, state fire marshals, the Royal Lifesaving Society of Canada, and many others.
The Ice Rescue Technician Certification Program was developed by active professionals – search and rescue, paramedics, scuba instructors, lifeguards, the military, police and fire fighters, with among them over 100 years of cumulative ice rescue experience. Combining the most applicable techniques of many rescue disciplines, IRT covers many ways to affect ice rescues. The primary objective of the course, however, remains to assure the safety of the rescuers themselves – since so many injuries and deaths during ice rescues have been due to well-intentioned rescuers.
Our Ice Rescue Technician Certification training includes one day indoor classroom then two days of outdoor hands-on work. We cover many areas including ice formation and types, ice breakup, pre-planning ice rescues, ice rescue tools and equipment, personal protective equipment, personal and team safety. The hands-on days will cover personal rescue, rescue boards and inflatables, ladders, inflated fire hoses, boats and other techniques, and mechanical advantage systems.
